Damage to stolen Much-painting Scream can't be repaired

In late August 2004 the two Munch-paintings Scream and Madonna were stolen from the Munch-museum in Oslo. In August this year the paintings were recovered in a police raid. It soon became apparent that the paintings had suffered some damage, but it wasn't until now that the extent has been made public. Some of the damage to Scream can't be repaired.

Both paintings were stored for quite some while in a high-moisture area, and Scream now has a large stain where moisture penetrated into the painting - Scream is also due to be tested for mildew-damage. Madonna has suffered several tears and gashes, and both paintings are full of glass dust. Experts expect that it will be impossible to repair the moisture-damage to Scream. Art traders and collectors note that the paintings still retain the same cultural value, however, and that the theoretical (the paintings are owned by the public, and will never be sold) commercial value of the paintings is not greatly diminished.
