At 8:10pm Norwegian time, Princess Märtha Louise gave birth to a daughter, which is to be named Maud Angelica Behn. At present the child is number 3 in line of succession to the throne of Norway, after HRH Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and Princess Märtha Louise. By decision of HM King Harald V, in consultation with Princess Märtha Louise, the child will not have a royal title.
This is the first royal birth in Norway in 30 years, and, excepting a short period between 1990, when Princess Märtha Louise was placed in the line of succession following an amendment of the Constitution, and January 1991, when King Olav V died, this is the first time that as many as three persons have been in the line of succession. There will be public flagging and gunsalutes across Norway tomorrow. In accordance with law and traditions, the President Speaker of the Parliament was informed immediately of the birth, and then, in order, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Bishop of Oslo, the Armed Forces, and the other Royal families of Europe.
